Apoballis Red Sword, also known as Apoballis acuminatissima ‘Lavallaei’, is a striking foliage plant prized for its silky, smooth leaves decorated with a unique silver-and-green camouflage pattern. At first glance it resembles the popular Schismatoglottis Thailand, but what sets it apart is the dramatic reddish-purple underside that gives the plant its “Red Sword” name. Light
- Bright indirect light is ideal.
- Can tolerate a few hours of gentle morning sun.
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch variegated leaves.
- Insufficient light can reduce variegation and slow growth.
Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
- Water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) of soil feels slightly dry.
- Increase watering during active growth in spring and summer.
- Reduce watering during cooler months.
Humidity
- Prefers moderate to high humidity (60%+).
- Benefits from humidifiers or greenhouse conditions.
- Higher humidity helps prevent browning leaf edges.
Temperature
- Ideal range: 20–30°C (68–86°F).
- Avoid temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Soil
- Rich, well-draining tropical plant mix.
- A blend containing coco coir, bark, perlite, and compost works well.

Seasonal Care Tips
Winter— Canadian winters mean shorter daylight and dry indoor air from heating. If natural light is limited from November through February, a full-spectrum grow light on a 12-hour timer helps maintain healthy growth and prevents etiolation (stretching toward light). Water sparingly once soil begins to dry, keep away from heating vents and cold glass, and use a humidifier or pebble tray to maintain humidity. Keep plants comfortably above 15°C.
